These memories seem slightly off key from those recalled in Chronicles. Nonetheless, with or without Dylan, the Scholar retains an important place in Dinkytown lore. The simple storefront belied its significance. A fire that started in the adjacent store that neighborhood residents called the “dirty grocery” caused significant damage to the half block of buildings that included apartments and stores. A demolition permit was taken out in March 1967 to level what remained of the buildings from 414 to 430 Fourteenth Avenue Southeast. They were replaced by a Burger King fast-food restaurant—a site that today houses a Subway, Pizza Hut and TCF Bank, and their surface parking lot.
At a Dinkytown reunion on November 23, 2014, nearly 150 current and former Southeast Minneapolis residents heard a folk music set by singerguitarist Pop Wagner and another set by Willie Murphy playing an energetic keyboard. Videographer Ossian Or, the emcee for the evening, was among several who remembered the Varsity when it was a theater. “I remember when this was a photography studio for many years after the theater closed,” he said. “I worked on film and video here. I realize that the person who occupied this as a photo studio for so many years served as a place holder” until Jason McLean created the current space that attracts acts from all over the world to its stage.
Many Dinkytown musicians moved to West Bank venues, especially after the Scholar closed. Journalist Cyn Collins interviewed many of them and created a compilation CD for her book West Bank Boogie.
Jerry Rau remained a prominent fixture on Dinkytown sidewalks for decades with his guitar and original folk songs. Many of these local musicians have public online selections through YouTube.
